 is live bacteria really good?

Livingprobiotics ingested are expected to adhere and proliferate in the intestine, thereby suppressing harmful bacteria and producing effective metabolites for the human body.

However, it is known that the ratio of probiotics adhering to the intestine while passing through gastric acid and bile acids in the digestive process is very inadequate.

Accordingly, some studies have been conducted to allow probiotics to reach the intestine while alive, such as encapsulation and coating,

but it has been confirmed through lots of studies that the probiotics itself has various functions even if it is not alive.

* Side effects of live probiotics

Some people think that probiotics are live bacteria, and because they are beneficial bacteria living in the intestines, there will be no side effects at all.

However, there are reports of side effects on live probiotics such as antibiotic resistance when live probiotics containing Enterococci were taken.

According to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety's Status of Reporting Abnormal Cases of Health Functional Food, gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea (30.7%),

gastrointestinal discomfort (8.7%), and vomiting (7.3%) and abnormal cases such as skin rash and hives (14%) were reported as side effects of live probiotics. And also, there have been reports of deaths from sepsis.

In some cases, it is necessary to consult a specialist about taking live probiotics.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cautions patients taking rejection control drugs after organ transplantation, patients treated for autoimmune diseases,

patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy, and heart disease patients who have had endocarditis in taking live probiotics.

* Alternative to live probiotics side effects, heat-killed probiotics

The body components of killed probiotics (peptidoglycan, lipoteichoic acid, β-glucan, mannose, nucleic acid, etc.) stimulate and activate immune mediators or immune cells in combination to promote anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and immunity. The effects on dead probiotics have already been considered as a true through many studies.

There are also studies that the dead probiotics treated with tyndallization (heat treatment) are more excellent in terms of immune activity than live probiotics. When heat-killed probiotics were ingested, immune mediators such as cytokines were expressed actively and it can activate the immune system.

In addition, unlike live probiotics, dead probiotics do not metabolize any more in the body when ingested, so they can be safely ingested without side effects such as antibiotic resistance or abdominal bloating.

It is a great advantage that killed probiotics can only be ingested at a high concentration because there is no problem in safety even when ingested in trillion units of 100 times or more of the number of live probiotics products.

Dead probiotics can stimulate immune cells in the small intestine which contains the most immune cells to make various immune mediators and activate immunity.

However, in order to stimulate immune cells more effectively, dead probiotics must be consumed at ‘high concentration'. Therefore, the high concentration of dead probiotics can be called ‘immunobiotics’.

Probiotics is very good for our health. However, to take it more safely and effectively, it is desirable to consume high concentration of killed probiotics.
